Track Renewal Fitzroy Street & Esplanade Queens Birthday Weekend 2011

Friday 17 June 2011

The new kerbing has been placed through the tram stop in Fitzroy Street at Canterbury Road and asphalt fills and levels the stop. It would appear that this stop may be abolished in the future.

Looking west along Fitzroy Street from Canterbury Road: I'm assured the surface isn't damaged by rain/trucks, just that all the debris has been blown out of the track flangeway and will be swept up today. In the distance work proceeds on asphalting the stop and its environs near Mary Street.

The kerb flares out on either side of the tracks at the platform stop near Mary Street. The new crossover can be seen mid picture.

fitzroy street As of this (Friday) morning, this was the westernmost limit of asphalting the track. Here the curve from Mary Street is being asphalted by hand. I'm amazed that such thin asphalt will withstand the hammering it will get from traffic turning right over the tracks at this intersection.

Looking eastwards from the Acland Street (north) stop along Fitzroy Street, in the foreground concrete is about to be poured into the pit. In the background, a concrete footing is being poured which will support a "brand new authentic replica" pole replacing an older pole adjacent.

Looking south-west along the Upper Esplanade away from Fitzroy Street, the curve is looking much better today, but concreting is incomplete.

In gloomy rainy weather more reminiscent of Sydney than Melbourne, the new platform stop in the Esplanade outside the Novotel hotel is under construction. When I asked, I was assured this will be finished by first tram tomorrow.

Beyond this stop, the track is completely finished.

The southern limit of construction is near the intersection of the Esplanade and Cavell Street (out of picture to the right). Here SW6 960 on a #79 service prepares to reverse for its journey to North Richmond.

SW6 960 waits time at the Cavell Street stop on the Esplanade. The crossover its just used can be seen in the background.

Yarra Trams really should be ashamed of itself with the shabby appearance of this tram - peeling paint, cracking wood-work: a PR exercise on their part as to why Ws should be withdrawn: neglect to make these venerable workhorses look ready for scrapping..
