Track Renewal Southbank Depot - Beacon Cove

Sunday 6 February 2011 (Day 9)

Evening

Swallow Street, looking in-bound: I didn't have a chance to get out on this last day till after 5.00pm. Here's the "ballast train" finishing off the out-bound line between Graham and Beacon Cove.

Graham, looking in-bound: in the background, the ballast train is back at Bridge Street being loaded with the last of the ballast. The tamper is sitting down at Beacon Cove, waiting for the last run of the ballast train. Graham Street stop is completed; the formwork for the pedestrian crossings are being placed.

near Bridge Street: It's almost 6.00pm and they're still welding rail using the spectacular thermit welding process. That's cutting it fine.

Bridge Street level crossing: while welding is taking place, the ballast train is being loaded.

Ingles Street: Yarra Trams workers are tying up the catenary while the large crane is waiting to remove the hoppers and the tamper once they've finished their work. Other workers are still laying the final topping of asphalt on Ingles Street.

Bridge Street level crossing, looking east: the ballast train is loaded the front-end loaders have disappeared and the street sweepers are cleaning up. Jus the asphalt to be laid on the crossing and it's finished.

Beacon Cove, looking in-bound: my last photo as I headed home for dinner: the ballast train has finished its run and will soon reverse to Ingle Streety for removal. The tamper has work yo do on the section of track south from Swallow Street before it, too, will be lifted at Ingles Street and transported to its next job elsewhere. We won't be seeing this machinery here for another 40 or so years.
