50th Anniversary Of Sydney Tram Closure

Sydney Tram Museum Vintage Tram Festival
26- 27 February 2011

Sunday 27 Feb 2011 (Afternoon)

We took a couple of hours off to do a bit of sightseeing and have a look at the Sea Cliff bridge. On our return, we noted 1740 returning from another trip to Sutherland. The weather is still warm and humid, but unfortunately the cloud cover that's persisted all day shows no sign of breaking up.

Inside the workshops, Melbourne Z2 car 111 was receiving some attention. To its right is Sydney C 37 which came from the Canberra Tradies Club and is being overhauled to go to Christchurch Tramways.

loftus The admonition in 1979 is a reminder of a bygone era. The quaity of its restoration and preservation is evident.

Another view of the interior of 1979; outside 1740 can be seen following us.

Either I hadn't been listening to the announcements or I had acquired a brain fade because I was quite startled to see a THIRD tram in our convoy, a tram that hadn't emerged all weekend: R 2001!

Well, I made sure I was out of 1979 with undue haste to record 2001 arriving at Royal National Park station.

2001, 1740, 1979 await departure. The intention was to recreate the last run-in of three R class trams on that fateful 25 February day fity years ago.

Once the Rs had run in, the gates were symbolically closed to commemorate the end of an era.

This concluded the weekend of formal activities at the Museum.

It just remained for the rest of the rolling stock to run into the workshops. O 805 and O 1111 are seen running in here.

Next it was 154's turn, with 728 following on behind.

It's getting crowded at the entrance. 1497 rolls in with 29 not far behind.

A last lingering look over the gate at the trams being stabled. Then an exchange of thanks, good wishes and farewells to the members of the STM before Ian MacCowan generously drove Michael and I back to the airport for our Qantas flight home to Melbourne.

What an incredible, unforgettable weekend.
